A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine which is somewhat similar to a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain objects, and this feature is something the lift truck does not provide. Usually, order pickers are powered by electricity. These kind of equipment are mostly utilized in a warehouse environment. Most often they are utilized for moving pallets and doing certain jobs in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the equipment forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the forks can be lifted up to the required level that makes it really convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials needed, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform can be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then directed or driven to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some businesses might have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker is also able to place pallets on a shelf. Stackers and forklifts could be utilized to complete these particular jobs at several companies instead.
