Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by huge industrial batteries that need to be charged frequently and maintained correctly. Safety procedures should be followed while someone connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is important for anybody working with a forklift battery. Complete protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be situated close to the charging place. The path to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow things like matches or lighters to be used while somebody is checking the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These gases are both explosive and toxic.
